Ukrainian visa types D and C explained
Type C — the short-stay visa
A type C visa covers short visits of up to 90 days within a 180-day period: tourism, business trips, private visits, conferences. If your country is neither visa-free nor e-Visa eligible, type C is usually the route for a short trip. It does not permit employment.
Type D — the long-stay visa
A type D visa is for long stays with a specific ground: work, study, volunteering or family reunification. Its defining feature is what comes after arrival — the type D visa is the basis for applying for a temporary residence permit in Ukraine. If your plan is to live in Ukraine rather than visit it, type D is your route regardless of how the trip starts.
How to choose between them
Ask two questions. How long? Up to 90 days — type C; longer — type D. What for? Any paid activity, study or family relocation needs type D even if the first stay is short: the purpose, not just the duration, defines the type. Choosing wrongly costs a repeat application, so settle this before collecting documents.
What both types share
Both are applied for at a Ukrainian consulate through the same step-by-step consular procedure: the online form, a document package for your purpose, and the consular fee. And whichever type you hold, entry requires a war-risk insurance policy covering the entire stay — it can be bought online before you travel.
If neither type seems to fit
Check the other routes first: your country may be visa-free for the trip you plan, or e-Visa eligible for its purpose. When in doubt about an unusual purpose, ask the consulate that serves your country — grounds and their documents are defined by official rules, not third-party lists.
