Applying for a Ukrainian visa at a consulate: step by step
Step 1. Make sure you actually need a consular visa
First check your route: citizens of many countries enter Ukraine visa-free, and some are eligible for the online e-Visa. A consular application is needed when your country is on neither list, or when your purpose of travel requires a type D visa. Who needs a visa at all is covered in "Who needs a visa to enter Ukraine".
Step 2. Determine the visa type
For short trips (tourism, business, private visits) you apply for a type C visa — it allows stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. For work, study, volunteering or family reunification you need the long-stay type D visa. A detailed comparison is in "Ukrainian visa types D and C explained". The type determines the document list, so settle this step before collecting papers, not after.
Step 3. Fill in the visa application form online
The form is completed on the official visa portal of Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs; the current portal link and instructions are on the official MFA visa page ↗. Enter your data in Latin characters exactly as in your passport. Print and sign the generated form — it goes into your document package.
Step 4. Gather the documents
The basic set usually includes: a passport with sufficient remaining validity, the printed and signed application form, a photo, a war-risk insurance policy covering your entire stay, proof of the purpose of travel (an invitation, bookings, documents from an employer or educational institution — depending on the visa type) and proof of sufficient funds. The exact list for your visa type and your country is on the official MFA visa page ↗ and on the website of the specific consulate: requirements can differ.
Step 5. Submit the documents at the consulate
The application is lodged at the Ukrainian diplomatic mission serving your country; in some countries intake is organised through accredited visa centres — check the current procedure on the website of the relevant consulate. An appointment is usually required. The consular fee is paid at submission — its amount depends on the visa type and the country of application: see the official source ↗ ↗. Apply well ahead of your trip: processing times are set by the MFA, and the current ones are on the official source ↗ ↗.
Step 6. Collect your passport with the visa and prepare for entry
Once a decision is made, you collect your passport with the visa affixed (or receive it by post where the consulate offers that service). Before travelling, check the visa's validity dates and the number of entries. Remember: the visa is not the only entry condition. Border officers may ask you to confirm the purpose of your trip, and your war-risk insurance policy must cover the entire stay — it can be bought online in a few minutes.
If your visa is refused
A refusal is not final: you have the right to fix its cause (most often an incomplete document package or an unconfirmed purpose of travel) and apply again.
Frequently asked questions
Where is a consular visa application submitted?+
At the Ukrainian diplomatic mission serving your country; in some countries — through an accredited visa centre. The current procedure and contacts are on the website of the relevant consulate.
How much is the consular fee?+
The fee depends on the visa type and the country of application. The current rates are published by Ukraine's MFA on the official visa page — check it rather than third-party sites.
How long does the application take?+
Processing times are set by Ukraine's MFA and can differ by visa type and consulate. The current timelines are on the official source; plan your submission with a margin before your travel date.
Is insurance required for the visa application?+
Yes. A policy with war-risk cover for the entire stay is a mandatory condition of entry to Ukraine, and it is usually included in the visa document package.
Can I get an e-Visa instead of a consular visa?+
Only if your country is on the e-Visa list and your purpose of travel matches it. The e-Visa does not replace a type D visa: work, study or long stays require a consular application.
