Ukraine visa documents: the complete checklist
The universal set
Whatever visa type you apply for, the application is assembled from the same core, per the official visa-information source ↗ ↗ (information valid as of 28 July 2026):
- Passport — see the three rules below;
- Application form — completed online and printed;
- Photo 35×45 mm;
- Medical insurance with coverage from EUR 30 000, valid for the entire period of stay;
- Proof of sufficient funds for the stay (per the government resolution on financial guarantees);
- Fee payment receipt — amounts and timelines here;
- Purpose documents — the part that differs by type.
The three passport rules that reject applications
Your passport must be valid at least 3 months after the date you intend to leave Ukraine, have at least 2 blank pages, and be issued within the last 10 years. Renew first, apply second — a fresh passport costs you days; a rejected application costs you the fee and weeks.
The insurance line, read carefully
The requirement is coverage from EUR 30 000 spanning the whole period of stay — not just the first trip. For Ukraine specifically, a standard policy is not enough in practice: war-related exclusions make ordinary policies fail, which is why a policy with the war-risk element is the version of this line that actually works end to end.
Purpose documents — by type
This is the variable part: an invitation letter for private and business visits, employer-side paperwork for a type D work visa, host-organization documents for a type D volunteer visa. The binding per-type lists live in the official source — treat our guides as the map and the source as the law.
Where and when to apply
Applications are lodged through a consulate or visa application centre — the consular process, step by step — no earlier than 3 months before the trip. One structural rule surprises people: applying in a third country generally requires a valid residence permit of that country — tourists passing through cannot usually apply there.
