Insurance for volunteers, humanitarian workers and journalists in Ukraine
The same requirement — with higher stakes
Volunteers, aid workers and journalists enter under the same rule as every visitor: a policy with war-risk cover for the entire stay. The difference is practical: these groups work closer to risk, so the war-risk element — cover for a civilian injured by hostilities or weapons — is not an abstraction but the working core of the policy.
The honest territorial limit
Read this before planning field work: cover does not apply in zones of active hostilities, in temporarily occupied territories, or within 50 km of either. A mission that takes you inside those areas takes you outside the cover — there is no add-on in this product that changes it. Plan logistics with the boundary in mind and check current official information about the areas involved.
Participation is excluded — reporting and helping are not
The terms draw one more line: taking part in hostilities, armed conflicts or military operations is excluded. Reporting from a permitted area, distributing aid, driving supplies, staffing a shelter — these are civilian activities, and a civilian injured while doing them is what the war-risk element exists for. Crossing from helping into participating moves you outside the policy entirely.
Practical set-up for a mission
- Dates: missions run long — the policy must span the whole stay (duration rules); extend before it lapses, not after.
- Add-ons: consider the radiation option and extended cover when buying, given the nature of the work.
- Documents: keep the policy PDF offline and the assistance number saved — the claims process starts with a call.
- Visa: volunteering is a type D ground — see the type D visa for volunteers guide for the visa side of the mission.
Where to check the fine print
The published terms are the authority on your specific case — read them here ↗ ↗. If your organisation has questions about a planned deployment, the assistance line answers cover questions before the trip, not only during it.
Frequently asked questions
Do volunteers and journalists need a special policy?+
The same class 18 policy with the war-risk element as any visitor — but for these groups the war-risk core and its limits matter most in practice.
Am I covered while reporting or distributing aid?+
Yes, as a civilian in permitted areas. Taking part in hostilities is excluded — helping and reporting are not participation.
Where does the cover not apply?+
In active-hostility zones, occupied territories and within 50 km of them. Missions inside those areas are outside the cover.
What visa does a volunteer need?+
Volunteering is a ground for the type D visa — see our type D guide for volunteers for the visa side.
What should be in place before deployment?+
A policy spanning the whole mission, considered add-ons (radiation, extended), the policy PDF offline and the assistance number saved.
