Biometric passport for Ukraine: who actually needs one

Short answer
Ukraine's official entry-regime table (as of 8 June 2023, retrieved 28 July 2026) does not impose a blanket biometric-passport requirement for visa-free entry. Biometric documents appear as an explicit condition only in specific rows: North Macedonia's visa-free regime applies exclusively to biometric travel documents, while Georgia and Turkey may additionally use biometric ID-card passports. For everyone else the table specifies an ordinary valid passport. A biometric passport is still the safer travel document in practice, but the formal requirement is row-specific — check your country's row at the official source.

What the official table says — and does not say

The authoritative document here is the MFA table “Entry regime to Ukraine for foreign citizens” as of 8 June 2023 (retrieved 28 July 2026) — the official source ↗ ↗. For the great majority of the 83 visa-free countries it specifies a valid ordinary passport — with no biometric qualifier. A blanket “biometric passports only” rule for visa-free entry is not what the table states.

Where biometrics are the explicit condition

A few rows name the document type precisely:

  • North Macedonia — visa-free entry applies exclusively to biometric travel documents.
  • Georgia — the regime extends to biometric ID-card passports in addition to ordinary passports.
  • Turkey — likewise includes biometric ID-card passports.

If your passport is from one of these countries, the document type is part of the rule itself — an old non-biometric document may not qualify where the row says biometric.

Why a biometric passport is still the better travel document

Even where the table does not demand it, a biometric passport reads faster at checks, matches how modern border systems verify identity, and avoids edge-case questions an old-format document can raise. If you hold both formats, travel on the biometric one — and if your two passports are from different countries, the dual-citizen rules are their own topic.

The passport basics that always apply

Whatever the format, the passport must be valid and undamaged, with the personal data readable. It is checked together with your insurance policy and against your 90/180 allowance — see the full document set for visa-free entry.

Check your own row

Rules are row-specific, and the table has its own date. Before travelling, open the official entry-regime table ↗ ↗ and read your country's row — the regime, the limit, and any document qualifier attached to it.
