Insurance at the Ukrainian border: validity and how to show it
What the check is about
Insurance with war-risk cover is a condition of entry for all foreign visitors, so border officers are entitled to ask for proof. The check is simple: does a valid policy exist for this traveller and these dates?
What makes the policy valid for the check
Four things: it is issued for you (name as in your passport); it includes the war-risk element; it is valid on the territory of Ukraine; and its term spans the entire stay — from the day you enter to the day you leave. A policy that starts tomorrow or ends mid-trip fails the requirement, which is the single most common mistake.
What exactly to show
The policy arrives as a PDF by email when you buy it online. Showing that PDF from your phone is sufficient; a printed copy works equally well and is a sensible backup if your battery dies. Keep it next to your passport — the two documents are checked together. The full conditions behind the policy are published by the insurer ↗ ↗.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Dates too short — booking the policy for part of the trip. Cover must reach your exit day inclusive.
- Name mismatch — the name must match the passport exactly, in Latin characters.
- No war-risk element — an ordinary policy does not qualify.
- Only a payment receipt — show the policy document itself, not the order confirmation.
About the border crossing itself
Practical questions of the physical crossing — checkpoints, queues, routes — are outside this site's scope; a dedicated resource covers them in depth: ukraineborder.com ↗. Here we keep to the insurance side: have the policy ready, valid and matching your passport.
